Abstract

Using used engine oil as an alternative fuel aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize hazardous waste. This study investigates the combustion characteristics of used engine oil and diesel fuel in a vertical furnace as a sustainable solution for energy and environmental challenges. The experimental study was conducted using a vertical furnace, a special design to optimize the combustion of both types of used engine oil (O) and diesel fuel (S) blends were tested with composition ratios of 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% (O/S). Parameters assessed include combustion temperature, fuel flow rate, flame height, and exhaust gas emissions. Combustion temperature was measured using a thermocouple K-type, while exhaust gas emissions were analyzed using an exhaust analyzer (Horiba-PG-300). This study employed inferential statistical analysis to explore the combustion performances of used engine oil and diesel fuel in a vertical furnace. The results indicate that used engine oil has the potential to serve as an alternative fuel with competitive performance compared to diesel fuel. However, challenges remain regarding exhaust gas emissions that need to be addressed. Further research should focus on efforts to reduce exhaust gas emissions and explore fuel blend variations under different operational conditions
